CAFCL: Reigning champions Al Ahly frustrated by Al Hilal draw in Group opener

Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly were held to a frustrating barren draw by Sudanese champions Al Hilal Omdurman in the two sides opening Group A CAF Champions League clash played on Friday afternoon at the Al Hilal Stadium.Fresh from another bronze place finish for a second consecutive year at the FIFA Club World Cup, the record African champions were looking to get their title defense off to a perfect start when they travelled to foreign territory but it was not to be for the Egyptian Red Devils as the game failed to produce any goals.⏱️ 𝐅𝐔𝐋𝐋 𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄!🇸🇩 @AlHilalSC_ 0-0 @AlAhly 🇪🇬The final whistle points to a goalless draw in Sudan. 🤝#TotalEnergiesCAFCL | #HSCASC pic.twitter.com/8PCz7QlZaG— TotalEnergies CAFCL – TotalEnergies CAFCC 🏆 (@CAFCLCC) February 18, 2022 All through the match though, it is the home side that seemed to be the most likely to get one over the Egyptian outfit as they had the most shots on target (4) compared to Al Ahly whom they restricted to only one shot on target that came deep in second half’s stoppage time. In the whole game, Al Ahly managed only five goal attempts compared to Al Hilal’s 15.Al Hilal had a couple of great opportunities towards the end of the first half as they threatened to steal a half time lead when they cranked up the pressure deep in the Al Ahly territory. However, they were unable to find a way past the resolute Egyptian defense who stood firm.📸 | جانب من الشوط الأول لمباراتنا أمام الأهلي المصري 🔵⚪#HSCASC | #Forza_Hilal | #TotalEnergiesCAFCL pic.twitter.com/rwwEYLU1uH— Al Hilal SC (@AlHilalSC_) February 18, 2022 In the second half, the clearest chance of the game fell to Mohammed Magdy in the 90+1st minute but despite his curling shot having the better of the goalkeeper, the ball failed to sneak into the back of the net as it cannoned off the upright much to their frustration.Head coach Mosimane, while admitting that his team only started playing well in in the second half, labelled the result as an okay performance as he settled for a point for his side.نهاية المباراة 🦅#الأهلي 0️⃣الهلال 0️⃣#يلا_يا_اهلي #افريقيا_يا_أهلي pic.twitter.com/nPVboWM0LL— ‏النادي الأهلي 🏡 (@AlAhly) February 18, 2022 “It is an okay start, not a good start.
