Depay’s late penalty pushes flawless Barca to a win past unfortunate Elche

Catalan giants were both ruthless and flamboyant in the last couple of appearances, but a team under construction – as Barca are at the moment – occasionally tends to drop a point or two when it’s a bit unexpected. That’s what almost happened today for them at Elche. They won 2-1 eventually, but only after coming from behind late in the second half. Firstly, Elche were one up and close to a sensational victory. Alas, it finished terribly for them following Depay’s penalty shortly after he came in from the bench.

Barca were pushing for the opener in the first period, but instead of coming in front, they went one behind seconds before the half-time break. The Blaugrana offspring Pedri provided the hosts with a shocking goal to make things worse. His aggressive tackle not only didn’t stop Elche but served as a bizarre, one-of-a-kind assist for their forward Fidel, who had no problem whatsoever nailing it into the bottom far corner with his left for 1-0.Barcelona’s display was overall dominating control but had issue w/ a lack of wide-outlets to stretch Elche’s compact block. Ferran’s substitutions did the world of good but fair to say that Elche were superb & gave Barcelona headaches despite they did overall well. pic.twitter.com/vt0vVrHhJ3— JP (@jdeposicion) March 6, 2022 The visitors were quick off the break, as City’s former striker Ferran Torres poached it to tie the game at one. He reacted superbly following Jordi Alba’s pass, just inches away from an offside. However, the same guy failed to wrap up the complete comeback within less than three minutes, blasting it above the crossbar from close range.Nevertheless, the Blaugrana managed to grab all three points, as second-half substitute Memphis Depay was accurate from the spot, with just six minutes left on the clock.
