Bob Vokey explains how to find your ideal wedge and sole grind

Titleist released the new Vokey Design SM9 family of wedges to PGA Tour players last November, then to the public in late January. On Friday, March 11, they went on sale in pro shops and golf specialty stores. Vokey Design SM9 wedges are in the bag of players like Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Will Zalatoris, and several other PGA Tour and LPGA players.

The SM9 wedges are available in three finishes, come in lofts from 46 to 62 degrees and there are six different sole configurations available as well. Referred to as grinds, the shape of the sole plays a massive role in how a wedge performs. Finding the grind that matches both your swing style and the course conditions you typically play in can go a long way in determining whether you struggle around the greens or develop a better short game.

Golfweek senior writer David Dusek was recently at the Titleist Performance Institute in Oceanside, California, and had a chance to get a lesson in wedge grinds from the man himself, Titleist’s master craftsman for wedges, Bob Vokey. This video will help you understand more about the different Vokey wedge grinds and who they are ideally suited for, which can help you make a smarter purchasing decision the next time you are in the market for wedges.
