Martha Karua weighs in on Kenya’s FIFA suspension

Former Gichugu MP Martha Karua has labelled FIFA’s suspension of Kenya as ‘unfortunate’ and wants the impasse surrounding Kenyan football resolved soon.On Thursday, FIFA who in February had suspended Football Kenya Federation due to government interference moved to ratify the same during their 72nd members’ conference in Qatar. The suspension will remain in force until the demands of the world football governing body are met.Trouble started in November when Sports CS Amina Mohammed moved to disband the Nick Mwendwa led FKF and installed a caretaker committee led by retired judge, Aaron Ringera to run football and prepare for elections during the six months that they would be in charge of football, their mandate expires on 11th May.After a couple of warning from both FIFA and CAF to have FKF honchos returned to office, Kenya was finally suspended after Amin remained defiant and insisted that reforms at FKF would go on.FIFA has further warned its members against coming into any sporting contact with Kenya while FKF is suspended. pic.twitter.com/jOjCuVhaaQ— Ole Teya (@Kevin_teya) February 24, 2022 Karua, who also served as Justice Minister in the past has now waded into the matter saying that innocent players are going to bear the brunt of the suspension.“It (the suspension) is the most unfortunate thing as our players are going to suffer through no fault of their own. We need to protect sports and also make sports a business and profession for our youth,” he told the Daily Nation. The seasoned lawyer further called on the sports act to be relooked to ensure that the right people are in charge of sports in the country.”It’s not the first time this (suspension) is happening. It calls for a rethink of what needs to be done. We need to look at the Sports Act to see what are the basic minimums that we must require clubs and associations like Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to have good governance,” she added.
