EUROPA LEAGUE: Hammered at home: Lyon suffers heavy defeat against the Londoners

Out of the four Europa League quarterfinal games, in three the result in the first leg was 1-1 and in those three the guests redeemed themselves in the second leg by winning in away games. After Leipzig (0-2) and Frankfurt (2-3), the Hammers managed an effective win in Lyon and will face Eintracht in the semi final: Lyon – West Ham 0-3. Both clubs are out of the Champions League places in their leagues and secretly looked at Europa League as a possibility to get into Europe’s top competition, and after a sensational Barcelona loss, that dream looks even more likely, but only for West Ham. Lyon disappointed their fans with another bad display and it seems that come next September, home fans will be without any European competition, since Lyon currently occupies 10th place in Ligue 1. And it also looks that coach Peter Bosz will end his journey in France after only one season.Lyon v West Ham United 14.04.2022 pic.twitter.com/mH6hkjr46s— Defend Ultras (@DefendUltras) April 14, 2022 Lyon is not so important in the French league for years, even thou they have a good squad, always good to compete for at least third place, which they did in recent years, finishing in third or fourth place, but this time they have failed to do so, and this club will look for another coach and a team rebuild if they fail to qualify for Europe. They missed their chances in London, even played 45 minute against 10 men West Ham and still managed only a draw. And they were technically superior to the London club, but in the end, they were soundly defeated.  Craig Dawson gets the goal for West Ham, if they didn’t believe it earlier, they might now 😂[📸 @louisbaker1991] #OLWHU | #UEL pic.twitter.com/LZoUp3ibc6— 101 Great Goals (@101greatgoals) April 14, 2022 All eyes were on the scorer from the first game Moussa Dembele, but he was actually quite average. It was Cameroonian’s international Karl Toko Ekambi who was the most active home team player. The game would be totally different if only his shot in the 5th minute didn’t hit the post, or if he had a bit more luck in the 27th minute, when he couldn’t get the ball inside the goal area. This way, Lyon was punished for their lack of concentration and finishing. After finally getting out of their own half due to Lyon’s high pressure, the Hammers scored after a corner from Fornals, after which Dawson was the highest in the penalty area for the lead. Throughout the game, the visitors vere superior in the air, and it’s wander that they scored only one goal that way. And the second goal came with a bit of luck, but in the worst possible moment, at the end of the first half. Johnson’s cross from the left was deflected by Emerson, but the ball came to Rice, who took a shot, and the ball touched Lukeba and went into the goal. And ideal scenario for the Hammers happened just 3 minutes into the second half of the game, when Jarod Bowen took a precise shot on the run in the bottom right corner for 3-0 and a silence at the Groupama Stadium. A much better teams than Lyon couldn’t overcome such a deficit so for the next 42 minutes, home fans could only sit and contemplate about theirs’s team wasteful season.UEFA EUROPA LEAGUEQuarter-final, second legThursdayAtalanta – RB Leipzig 0-2 (0-1) /first leg 1-1//Nkunku 18, 87 pen/Barcelona – Eintr.Frankfurt 2-3 (0-2) /first leg 1-1//Busquets 90+1, Depay 90+10 – Kostic 4, 67, Borre 36/Olympique Lyon – West Ham 0-3 (0-2) /first leg 1-1//Dawson 38, Rice 44, Bowen 48/Rangers – Braga 2-1 (2-0) /first leg 0-1//Tavernier 2, 44 (p) – Carmo 83/***odds are subject to change
