Rebel Navas: ‘I want to play, something has to change’

Just as champagne was about to open in the PSG locker room, Keylor Navas spilled it out – he is unhappy. Off course, it’s not something that wasn’t known, in fact, it was the worse kept secret in French football, but now it’s officially official. Just after PSG’s win against Angers, which brought them 10th French title, Navas decided to speak. Costa Rican keeper was undisputed number 1 until last season, when PSG decided so sign every free agent possible and Gigi Donnarumma came to the club. Both players were sharing their game time, but Navas is not happy, since the Italian is brought for the future, and has signed until 2026, while the 35-year old keeper is under contract until 2024. Keylor Navas tells Canal Plus on his future: “I’m happy in Paris, I’ve a good relationship with Donnarumma but I want to play all the games – same situation like this season would be complicated”. 🚨🇨🇷 #PSG“The situation has to change”, he added – quotes via @hadrien_grenier. pic.twitter.com/qUtYKkdaK8— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) April 20, 2022 This season, in Ligue 1, Navas started 17 times out of 33 possible matches, but he remained on the bench in the two Champions League matches against Real Madrid and witnessed two Gigi’s blunders, against Real and against Marseille in the last round and he waited until the 10th Ligue 1 title was secured, until he decided to send a clear message to the nation. “You have to study a lot of things. In the end, I have a very good relationship with Donnarumma, there are no problems with him. Of course, I still want to play all the matches, if the situation stays like this year, it will be complicated. We’ll see what happens in the future. My family is happy in Paris, I’m happy here. We’ll see what happens, but it has to change one way or another” he told Canal +. PSG storm through Angers to clinch the championship title! And his coach Mauricio Pochettino has worries of his own. The Argentinian coach was brought in to win the title (that goes without saying), but first and foremost to win the Champions League. He failed to win the title in his first year and didn’t won the most prestigious European competition in two years. His job is on the line, but he still had to comment about the keeper’s competition. “We will have to listen to what he has to say. The season has been what it has been and no other club in the world has the same situation with two goalkeepers. The cohabitation and the competition have been good. But the future will be different. Whether it’s Keylor or Gigio, they would have liked to play more” said Pochettino, referring Navas’ comments. But will he be around next season to deal with the situation, or will it be another manager?
