Budding Kenyan defender wins award in England

Kenyan left-back Vincent Harper continued the impressive feat of footballers from the country scooping the end-of-season awards as he bagged the Eastleigh’s Young Player of the Season.Harper becomes the third Kenyan in a fortnight to win an award with Ian Otieno winning the Most Consistent Player at Zesco United while David ‘Calabar’ Owino was as the Most Disciplined Player at Napsa Stars.🏆 YOUNG PLAYER OF THE SEASON 🏆👏 40 appearances in all competitions⚽️ 1 goal, 5 assists from left back💙 @Eastleigh_TSSC POTSA brilliant first season with the #Spitfires, @_Haarper17! 👏 pic.twitter.com/Vl6ChVHWHj— Eastleigh FC (@EastleighFC) May 15, 2022 The 21-year-old was one of the few shining lights in an otherwise gloomy season for Eastleigh who secured another season in the English National League (Fifth tier) after battling relegation for the majority of the season.The diminutive left-back had an interesting summer transfer window back in 2021 as he joined Chippenham after being released by Bristol City’s U23 side but only lasted a month at the club before again packing his bags to join Eastleigh.Harper featured in the 40 games for Eastleigh and managed to chip in with a goal and five assists as he also made an FA Cup appearance in the 2-0 defeat to Boreham Wood which bundled them out of the competition.It might not come as a surprise if top clubs from higher leagues in England come for the signature of Harper following his impressive season with Eastleigh.Kenyans Ayunga and Harper feature in EnglandThe left-back who was born in Kenya but moved to England at a tender age has previously expressed his interest in playing for Harambee Stars.“I have not received any contact from both FA’s (England and Kenya) but if at any point the call comes to feature for Harambee Stars then I will definitely consider it.I don’t know much about the team but I have watched Victor Wanyama since he was at Southampton and I admire his style of play and composure on the ball,” said Harper in a past interview.
