Man United after new acquisitions – but what to do with all those loanees?

The preparations at Carrington training ground for the pre-season have begun. Manchester United staff are slowly coming together causing the sports public to ask many questions. One of them being – what to do with the Red Devils who are returning from loans? The most resounding names are Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek, once projected to be the energy that will bring Manchester United back at the top of English football. Unfortunately for both club and the players themselves, it resulted poorly.Even so, the two players were all smiles on the first day of pre-season training under Erik ten Hag as they aim to resurrect their Old Trafford careers under the new boss.Anthony Martial reports for Manchester United pre-season training at Carrington 🇫🇷#MUFC pic.twitter.com/1IjiZixHdE— United View (@unitedviewtv) June 27, 2022 The pair looked very glad to be back after months out on loan. Both the Dutchman and the Frenchman fell out of favour in previous regimes at Old Trafford, failing to impress Ole Gunnar Solskjaer nor his successor, Ralf Rangnick, but they will be hoping to revive their Manchester United careers.Martial’s enthusiastic grin may have hidden some nerves on his return to Carrington after his loan spell at Sevilla. At Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, he made 12 appearances, scoring once, and the Spanish club decided against making the move permanent. It appears interest in Martial, who is available for transfer, is particularly low.The Frenchman, 26, joined United for 42 million euros as an exciting 19-year-old from Monaco in 2015, but has failed to live up to expectations at Old Trafford.United are reluctantly expecting the forward to stay at the club this season and Ten Hag will have to accommodate him in his plans, Sportsmail reported last week.Checking in at Carrington ahead of 2022/23 🔴#MUFC pic.twitter.com/uJyEZgNnM3— Manchester United (@ManUtd) June 27, 2022 Van de Beek has walked a similar path but the Holland international has been handed a lifeline at United with the appointment of Ten Hag, having played just 70 Premier League minutes for the club in the first half of last season.Van de Beek, 25, strode into the training ground with a broad smile on his face after six months on loan at Everton, where he made seven appearances and scored one goal.Soon after his appointment in April, Ten Hag indicated he would include Van de Beek, whom he coached at Ajax, in his pre-season squad. His short spell at Goodinson Park continued the uncertain future the 25-year-old has faced since arriving from Ajax in a 46.5 million euros deal in 2020, after being handed just four starts in the top flight last season by Solskjaer. There are other loaned players who came back and will be looking for their place in the starting line-up. If allowed to by not being sold, of course. Brandon Williams, who spent last season at Norwich City, where he established himself and made 29 appearances, was also back in the building, although United are believed to be open to offers for the 21-year-old full back. Those who weren’t away and had either great performances or no performances at all, welcomed their shortly-away teammates. David de Gea, Luke Shaw and Phil Jones were also among the first-team stars to return to Carrington on the first day of ten Hag’s new era.Tue 02:00: (2.80) Atletico Tucuman (3.05) Godoy Cruz (2.75)The Dutch boss was announced as the new United manager in April, replacing interim manager Rangnick, who has left the club. Newly appointed assistant coach Steve McClaren was also pictured pulling up at Carrington, 21 years after leaving his role as Sir Alex Ferguson’s No 2 at Old Trafford. Back to the playing staff. After some of the footballers playing in June’s Nations League international matches, such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes, several first-team stars will not be in attendance. But even so, a sizeable number of absentees still enjoying their holidays, there will still be 15 senior players turning up for their first season under ten Hag – including out-of-favour England duo Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford. Here we go, Erik ten Hag arrives at Carrington for Manchester United’s first day of pre-season training hours before players are due pic.twitter.com/6kPvKH7iZl— Edmundoz006 (@EddieEdd10) June 27, 2022 Given they finished sixth in the Premier League last season, 13 points off the Champions League places, the former Ajax coach will have plenty of work to do. Their total of 58 points was still their worst total in 32 years, and 35 points off the eventual total of champions – and fierce rivals – Manchester City. The Red Devils narrowly pipped West Ham to the second Europa League qualifying spot, narrowly missing out on the ignominy of the third-tier Europa Conference League.
