WAFCON 2022: Tunisia seek quarterfinal berth as Cameroon eye first win

Samir Landolsi’s Tunisia have started the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in flying fashion, and they have no intention of letting up their intensity when they play their second match against Zambia on Wednesday evening with a quarterfinal berth on the line. The Tunisians hammered Togo 4-1 in their WAFCON opener and as they now face Zambia, Landolsi knows complacency “would be an unprecedented mistake.”📹 𝐇𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒: 🇹🇳 4-1 🇹🇬 Ruthless #TeamTunisia run riot to bag the 3 points against #TeamTogo!#TotalEnergiesWAFCON2022 | #EmpoweringOurGame | @Football2Gether pic.twitter.com/3bUpky43RK— #TotalEnergiesWAFCON2022 (@CAFwomen) July 4, 2022 Tunisia are full of confidence following their big win against Togo, but they know Zambia are likely to far stiffer opposition.“They (Zambia) have more experience than us at the international level, they are coming out of an Olympic tournament. We are returning to WAFCON after 14 years of absence, but we have assets to showcase,” says Carthage Eagles striker Mariem Houji, as she accompanied her coach at the pre-match press conference.##NAJAVA_MECA_6492225##Zambia goalkeeper Hazel Nali, who was sensational in ensuring her team somehow managed a goalless draw in their opening game despite being under siege from Cameroon, knows she is in for another tough encounter given the threat posed by Tunisian attackers Sabrine Ellouzi and Houji.“We saw their match against Togo. Their main asset is the attack. We have a strong defence,” said Nali, before adding that “this match will not be the same as that we played against Cameroon. Ochumba Oseke and Xiomara Mapepa were suspended and will now join us, which is a big plus for our attack.”🇹🇳 THE DEADLY DUO OF 𝐓𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐒𝐈𝐀 🦅 1️⃣ game, combined 4️⃣ goals for @Sabrine_09 and Mariem Houij ⭐️#TotalEnergiesWAFCON2022 | #TeamTunisia | #EmpoweringOurGame pic.twitter.com/VSDkrtvkNX— #TotalEnergiesWAFCON2022 (@CAFwomen) July 4, 2022 Zambia coach, Bruce Mwape, agrees and called for more precision from his team in all areas of the pitch.“The girls need to be more attentive to each other, and above all stay focused, because danger can come from anywhere,” says Mwape.Landolsi says he and his staff have studied the playing system of the Copper Queens, who remain a formidable threat despite the absence of the talismanic Barbara Banda.“We watched their game against Cameroon, the defence is well placed and their attackers are constantly in anticipation of opportunities upfront. It’s up to us to find the flaws,” says Landolsi.MATCH DAY @Copper_Queens 🇿🇲 vs Tunisia 🇹🇳 📅: 6th, July, 2022 🏟️: Mohammed V Stadium ⌚: 19:00 (CAT)#TotalEnergiesWAFCON #TotalEnergiesWAFCON2022 #EmpoweringOurGame #WeareCopperQueens pic.twitter.com/xfIQXX28Oy— Zambia WNT (@Copper_Queens) July 6, 2022 This will be the first encounter between the two sides, and a rousing encounter awaits at the Mohammed V Hassan Complex in Casablanca on Wednesday. In the second match of the day, Cameroon will be eyeing a first victory in the tournament when they face Togo.Reporting by CAF.
