Darwin Nunez came off the bench to win a decisive penalty and score deep in injury time to give Liverpool the edge over Manchester City in the Community Shield match at King Power Stadium in Leicester on Saturday night. The Reds deserved the win in what was only the first chapter of what promises to be a thrilling race for supremacy in English football.Trent Alexander-Arnold anawaweka Liverpool kifua mbele dhidi ya Manchester City kwenye Community Shield.✅ Liverpool 1-0 Manchester CityWataendelea hivi kipindi cha pili? pic.twitter.com/CKC1UX1SLP— Mozzart Bet Kenya (@mozzartbetkenya) July 30, 2022 All eyes have been firmly on two blockbuster strikers who joined Manchester City and Liverpool during this close season, Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez, respectively. But it was one of the local boys who gave us the breakthrough in what was a thoroughly entertaining opening 45 minutes.Trent Alexander Arnold fit a precise curling shot that evaded Ederson and ended up in the net via the far post. While Nunez watched the early proceedings from the subs bench, Haaland tussled and tangled with Virgil van Dijk. It may have only been the first match of the season, but it already looks like we’re going to have an epic rivalry between a striker and a centre-back of the highest quality.Jurgen Klopp’s men held the lead despite the Cityzens usual control of the ball. Despite Riyad Mahrez’s persistent attempts to create an opening, the Reds’ goalkeeper Adrian didn’t have that much to do.City managed to draw level late on, thanks to another fresh addition to the club. Julian Alvarez tucked the ball in to restore parity to mark his first competitive match for the Premier League holders with a goal. But just when everyone expected City to use the momentum and continue to attack, that man Nunez popped up and made a difference. The former Benfica hitman rose high on the far post to head Mohamed Salah’s cross towards the net, but the ball bounced of Ruben Dias’ hand. The Uruguayan appealed frantically for a penalty, and it was given – albeit after a lengthy VAR check. Salah stepped up to restore the Reds’ lead with ten minutes left.Nunez was heavily criticised for his alleged poor finishing. Still, Liverpool’s new star shut a few up in added time when he beat Ederson with a diving header to ensure his team’s victory and the first trophy of the season.Ironically, it was actually Haaland who wasted a glorious chance to at least get on the scoresheet in injury time, but he blasted against the bar and over when the entire goal was at his mercy. We’ll be watching a lot of action between these two teams this season. But the first blood goes to Liverpool.
