Sofapaka confirm re-union with Kigonya

Football Kenya Federation Premier League side Sofapaka FC have confirmed the recapture of experienced custodian Mathias Kigonya ahead of the new season.Upon leaving Azam after the expiry of his contract, the Ugandan custodian was reportedly being courted by another Tanzanian side Kagera Sugar but it was Sofapaka who managed to secure his services for a second stint.Kigonya reveals why he left KenyaIn a statement, Batoto Ba Mungu noted that the custodian was rejoining Sofapaka on a long-term deal.”We are glad to have agreed a deal to acquire the services of Uganda cranes custodian Mathias Kigonya on a long-term contract. Kigonya, who is back at the club after leaving four years ago, is expected to bring much-needed experience to our goalkeeping department. He rejoins the club from Tanzanian side Azam Football Club,” the club wrote.With Fredrick Odhiambo leaving for Rwanda’s AS Kigali last month, the 2009 champions were left without an experienced shot stopper as Simon Masaka was sparingly used.Former Sofapaka FC custodian departs AzamKigonya will offer experience to the goalkeeping department that has Masaka and David Obasanjo, the teenager recruited recently.The Ugandan international joined Sofapaka for his first stint in 2016 and went on to spend just over two years with Batoto Ba Mungu, leaving in October 2018 at a time when the club was struggling financially.After parting ways with Sofapaka, Kigonya joined Kakamega Homeboyz before moving to Zambia, and later joined Azam in 2021.
