CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: PSG finished second after Benfica’s six goals cannonade in Portugal

In Group H of the Champions League, Benfica and Paris Saint Germain were certain participants in the next round, and the only question was who will finish first. Since both clubs played 1-1 against each other, the goal difference was the main tiebreaker. So, the Parisians needed a win in Turin, and Benfica had an ‘easier’ task to score as much goals as possible against Maccabi. Both clubs managed their tasks but eventually the Portuguese club scored 6 goals and finished first. When Joao Mario scored for the final 6-1 in the 92nd minute, both clubs had the same goal difference 16:7, so the next tiebreaker was the number of away goals and that’s were the Portuguese club won the duel and sat on the first place in the group. That means that on Monday 7th of November, when the draw for the knockout phase of the Champions league starts, PSG will not be among the seeded clubs.JOÃO MARIO QUI ENVOIE BENFICA EN PREMIÈRE PLACE DU GROUPE AVEC CE BUT EXCEPTIONNEL pic.twitter.com/KwauHXYYD4— Amaury Gonçalves (@AmauryGnclvs) November 2, 2022 Benfica’s big win over Maccabi was also good for Juventus, who avoided being humiliated and crashing out of Europe completely. Not since the 2013-14 season have Juventus failed to make it out of the group stage in the Champions League and tonight they were in danger of finishing the European journey and in one moment, they were the last in the group. But, Benfica took the lead and soon the Italian giant came back to the third place and the Europa League. PSG were winless in all four away matches in European competition against Juventus, and tonight they broke that negative record thanks to Mbappe and Mendes goals. Coach Galtier didn’t want to risk anything and fielded out the strongest 11 minus the suspended Neymar, while Juventus had no less than 11 injured players. It look as the beginning of the end for Juventus in the 12th minute already, as Kylian Mbappe picked up the ball outside the penalty area, passed Gatti and Locatelli (who went to the ground) and smashed the ball into the bottom corner. But Juve didn’t give up as they did in most matches, they had two good chances, which ended in off target shots, but eventually they equalized and the unlikely striker was Leonardo Bonucci. The captain put the Old Lady back on level terms, with a tap in after Cuadrado’s header was denied by Donnarumma. The guests had two good chances before the equalizer, but Mbappe’s volley went just over the bar, while Messi’s shot was saved by Szczesny. Juve were on equal terms with the guests for most of the second half, but substitute Nuno Mendes made a great solo effort in the 69th minute and brought a victory for PSG, which eventually meant nothing, because of Benfica. The Portuguese club did their job as expected, and won against Maccabi 6:1. After the initial lead after only 20 minutes, the home crowed expected a cannonade, but instead an equalizer followed after the penalty spot. Benfica attacked and created chances but they regained the lead half an hour before the end of the match. Only then they started to score one after another and counted until 6. They left the exciting part for the very end, as the last goal was scored in injury time.CHAMPIONS LEAGUEGroup stage – Round 6TuesdayLeverkusen – Club Brugge 0-0Porto – Atletico 2-1 (2-0)/Taremi 5, Eustaqio 24 – Marcano 90+5/Bayern – Inter 2-0 (1-0)/Pavard 32, Choupo-Moting 72//Liverpool – Napoli 2-0 (0-0)/Salah 85, Nunez 90+8/Olympique de Marseille – Tottenham 1-2 (1-0)/Mbemba 45+2 – Lenglet 54, Hojbjerg 90+5/Plzen – Barcelona 2-4 (0-2)/Chory 50 pen, 63 – Alonso 6, Torres 45, 54, Torre 75/Rangers – Ajax 1-3 (0-2)/Tavernier 86 pen – Berghuis 4, Kudus 29, 56, Conceicao 89/Sporting CP – Eintracht Frankfurt 1-2 (1-0)/Gomes 39 – Kamada 62 pen, Kolo Muani 72/WednesdayReal Madrid – Celtic 5-1 (2-0)/Modric 6 pen, Rodrygo 21 pen, Asensio 51, Vinicius 67, Valverde 71 – Jota 84/Shakhtar – RB Leipzig 0-4 (0-1)/Nkunku 10, Silva 50, Szoboszlai 62, Olmo 68/AC Milan – Salzburg 4-0 (1-0)/Giroud 14, 57, Krunic 46, Messias 90+1/Chelsea – Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 (2-1)/Sterling 18, Zakaria 30 – Petkovic 7/Copenhagen – Borussia Dortmund 1-1 (1-1)/Haraldsson 41 – Hazard 23/Juventus – Paris Saint-Germain 1-2 (1-1)/Bonucci 39 – Mbappe 13, Mendes 69/Maccabi Haifa – Benfica 1-6 (1-1)/Chery 26 pen – Ramos 20, Musa 59, Grimaldo 69, Rafa Silva 73, Araujo 88, Joao Mario 90+1/Manchester City – Sevilla 3-1 (0-0)/Lewis 52, Alvarez 73, Mahrez 83 – Mir 31/
